HISTORY

The Swedish Archaeological fieldwork

The Berbati Valley owes its historical memory to a large extent to the Swedish archaeologists who carried out fieldwork in our region, beginning in the 1930s with the pioneers Axel. W Persson, Gösta Säflund, Erik J. Holmberg and Åke Åkerström who excavated the valley’s landmarks, such as the Mastos Hill, the Tholos Tomb and the Western Necropolis.

In the 1980s, the Swedish fieldwork was continued on a large scale by the late Berit Wells, who carried out a surface survey in the Berbati Valley and the mountainous region around the village of Limnes, “The Berbati-Limnes Archaeological Survey 1988-1990”, collecting material dating from prehistory to the early 19th century, thus capturing the evolution of the area over the centuries.

From 1994 onwards, several archaeological sites were further documented within the framework of the Berbati Valley Project with the aim of investigating the agricultural economy of the valley, while the project was completed in 1999 with an intensive survey of the Mastos hill.
